Why This Course?

Our 2-year Level 6 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People is a full specialist qualification which gives students a route to apply to join the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society’s specialist Children and Young People’s Therapist Accredited Register, thus enhancing employment opportunities to work in this area.

Students will focus on increasing their specialist knowledge and understanding through a combination of tutor-led theory, class discussion, reflection, practical exercises, reading lists, and comprehensive course notes, providing a varied and inspiring learning environment. This course will increase understanding of the Theoretical Modules of Developmental Stages of Childhood and Adolescence, the context of counselling Children and Young People, and what issues might be faced within this context. Students will be able to evaluate ethical practice when working with Children and Young people and manage the counselling relationship and process when working with Children and Young People.

In year 2, students will add 50 hours of clinical practice in supervised placement with a specialist Children and Young People’s Agency approved by Chrysalis. During this placement, students will undertake a full clinical case study resulting in a dissertation due at the end of the 2-Year course.

This course is a full and comprehensive training. Open to qualified counsellors who are interested in working towards becoming a specialism in this area of counselling, this course is a total of 360 Guided Learning Hours over 2 years. Students will gain 240 Guided Learning Hours in Year 1 and 120 Guided Learning Hours in Year 2. It is intensive but taught part-time.
