Chrysalis Certificate in Working with Self-Harm

This tutor led online workshop is for therapists who want to develop their understanding and be better able to help clients who self-harm. You will learn key information on the ways people self-harm and reasons for self-harm, prevalence, links to suicide, how to assess risk and strategies for working with clients in a non-judgemental, ethical and supportive way. You will begin working towards developing a professional confidence in working therapeutically with people who self-harm.

Aims and Objectives:

This is a one-day programme for therapists with a foundation of knowledge about Self Harm who wish to develop their practice and share their experience and knowledge with other therapists.

Those with no prior knowledge will also benefit from the course and may wish to watch the Chrysalis Year 1 Supplementary Learning webinar ‘Self Harm’ before attending this programme.

All participants should familiarise themselves with the supporting material in advance of this training.

During this workshop, the tutor will:

  • Develop your understanding and confidence to enable you to work with clients who self-harm
  • Consider several self-harming behaviours
  • Have a clearer understanding of the reasons clients self-harm and the benefits or secondary gains
  • Develop harm reduction strategies to suggest and use with clients who self-harm
  • Review ethical and appropriate ways to work with your clients in line with draft updated NICE guidelines 2022
  • Discuss self-harm and suicide and know what to do with a client who presents with suicide ideation
